All You Need to Know About Chemical Peel

Dr Jagatjit Singh Kohli 30 Jul, 2020

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments used to improve the appearance and feel of the skin. This treatment can be used on a variety of body parts including face, hands and neck. The procedure includes the application of a chemical solution to the desired area. The solution treats the skin by inducing exfoliation and then peel off of the skin.

A chemical peel is effective for a range of skin conditions and problems including:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines

  • Sun damage

  • Acne scars

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Scars

  • Melasma

  • Uneven skin tone or redness

Chemical peels are of three different types; Superficial peels, Medium peels and deep peels which include the treatment of upper, upper and middle and deep middle layers of skin respectively.

The procedure of chemical peels:

A chemical peel is an outpatient procedure. Before the chemical peel is done, the skin is cleaned using a medical-grade cleaning agent. Once clean, a range of chemical solutions including glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid (phenol) is applied to small areas on the skin. These solutions induce small wounds that allow the new skin to appear.

It is normal to feel a burning sensation during the chemical peel procedure. The burning sensation lasts for around 10-15 minutes and then a stinging sensation arises. The dermatologist must put cold compresses on the skin to soothe the pain and discomfort.

What are the risks of chemical peels?

In certain skin types, a permanent or temporary color change can happen. Moreover, in some people scarring can be evident although the risk is minimum. In case you have a history of a herpes outbreak, you are likely to develop cold sores. All these risks can be easily controlled and prevented by discussing the options with the dermatologists. Make sure you discuss any medication you take and your skin allergy history with the dermatologists in detail.

What is the cost of a chemical peel procedure?

Chemical peel cost differs from one cosmetology clinic to another. The cost further depends on several factors including location, the expertise of the provider, and what type of peel you want to get. Usually, lighter peels are less expensive than deeper peels.

A chemical peel is an effective way to get rid of a myriad of skin problems. However, it is recommended to reach out to experience and learned dermatologists. Chemical peel when done wrong can cause permanent damage to your skin.
