Working from Home: Should you Wear Sunscreen to Protect your Skin Indoors?

Digital Doctor 25 Feb, 2022

A big skincare question making the rounds nowadays is whether the indoor light contributes to premature ageing of the skin.

The experts claim that indoor lighting can affect the skin however, the effects can be controlled by using a quality sunscreen. Sunscreen and such products available in the market help us protect our skin and thus premature aging and related concerns.

These days, staying at home has become our daily routine due to the pandemic which has made us compromise on certain aspects, such as wearing sunscreen. This has triggered a question in people’s minds whether it is still required to cover your body with SPF when they are spending time indoors.

If you are wondering the same, you must know that SPF stays your protective cover, no matter you are indoor or outdoor. UVA rays present indoors can cause skin cancer. According to four out of five dermatologists, wearing sunscreen inside is as important as outside the home when exposed to the sun’s damage.

Then there is blue light:

The blue light from smart devices, computers, and TVs is harmful to the skin. Though blue light emitted from electronic devices may not cause any sunburns but they tend to cause serious significant skin damage gradually by increasing the oxidation in the skin. This creates the production of melanin and pigmentation in the skin causing age spots. So make sure you wear sunscreen even when you are not stepping out from your home. You should also add an antioxidant serum to your daily health routine.

Effect of UVA rays:

UVA rays have a longer wavelength compared to the UVB rays so they enter indoors. These rays tend to seep deep into your skin while breaking down collagen which is the main reason behind wrinkles. Of course, there is no one in the entire world who would like to look older than their age because of the skin damage.

How often should you apply sunscreen when present at home?

Now you don’t have the misconception that there is no need to apply SPF when staying inside, in the same way, don’t reserve the use of it only for sunny days, it is extremely important to use it on a cloudy day as well because 80% of UV rays pass through the clouds. So, coat the skin liberally and sub the sunscreen thoroughly on daily basis also don’t forget to use lip balm.
