An Introduction to PRP

Dr. Shuba Dharmana 27 Jul, 2020

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has become a credible skin rejuvenation procedure. Both dermatologists and patients prefer the treatment considering its high efficiency and minimal side-effects. This post has a crisp introduction of PRP, the complete PRP procedure and the benefits of PRP.

What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is highly concentrated blood plasma with a high number of platelets. Usually, it has 3-5 times more platelets than the blood circulating in our body. In addition to that, PRP contains platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF) and a range of other bioactive proteins that are known to have great rejuvenation benefits for the skin.

PRP for skin rejuvenation is a treatment in which the plasma from one’s body is used to stimulate collagen production and cell migration. These two processes are responsible for reducing the many signs of ageing including lines, folds, wrinkles and more. PRP results are long-lasting, usually unaffected for over two years. The results look very natural and not overdone and hence preferred by all. Additionally, it is minimally invasive, has no known side-effects and effective for treating almost every part of the body.

Procedure of PRP

PRP skin rejuvenation is a non-invasive procedure which is proven very safe and simple:

The expert extracts 10 ml to 30ml blood from your body. The blood is spun in a centrifuge machine for 8-10 minutes. The quantity of blood taken depends upon the areas that are to be treated.

The plasma is separated from the blood by the spinning. The centrifugation process separates the top layer of blood, fibrin and plasma.

The plasma is then injected into the affected areas to bring the desired results.

The entire process takes around 20 minutes to complete.

Benefits of PRP:

Plasma Rich Platelet therapy for skin rejuvenation has a range of benefits to offer, including:

Non-invasive procedure:

It is a non-surgical process. The dermatologist uses a syringe and a small needle to extract as well as re-inject the PRP into the affected area.

Time-efficient:

Usually, PRP therapy takes not more than 30 minutes. The ideal time for a successful PRP session is between 20-30 minutes. As soon as the platelet-rich plasma is activated it imitates the function of injury response in the body. The healing and growth features of PRP work on the epidermis and work on enhancing the texture and appearance of skin.

Instant results:

You can easily see the results of PRP within a few days of completing the procedure. As soon as the skin starts recreating collagen in the affected area naturally, you can see the change in the texture and appearance of the skin.
