How Can You Wear a Helmet Without Losing Hair?

Digital Doctor 05 Aug, 2021

Wearing a helmet is unavoidable if you use a two-wheeler for your daily commutes. While helmets ensure safety during the drive, long-term use of helmets is reported to cause baldness in people. Irrespective of the gender, both males and females experience some amount of hair loss with the daily use of helmets. However, it is possible to avoid baldness from wearing a helmet and we have covered all these aspects in this post.

First, let us understand how wearing a helmet can cause baldness:

If you are wearing an ill-fitted, dirty and considerably old helmet, you are exposing your hair to a wide range of hair problems. Some common problems that people face from wearing a helmet the wrong way include:

1. Hair infections

2. Traction Alopecia

3. Friction hair fall

4. Dandruff from dirty helmet

5. Itchy scalp because of excessive sweating

So, is it possible to prevent hair loss from wearing a helmet? Yes, it is very much possible and here is how.

Tips to avoid hair fall from wearing a helmet:

While you cannot avoid wearing a helmet, you can always take some preventive steps and ensure no hair loss or related problems.

Pay attention to the cleanliness of scalp and hair

The more attentive you will be to your hair hygiene, the better you can take care of your hair inside the helmet. The more you allow dirt and sweat to accumulate in your hair, the worse they get when covered under the helmet for long hours. Use a hair-appropriate shampoo and conditioner to wash your hair regularly.

Never wear an ill-fitted helmet

The more your helmet moves on your head, the higher you are exposed to the risk of traction alopecia. Traction Alopecia is caused when your hair is tied too tightly and pushed backward. This loosens the hair roots and hence the hair loss.

Wear the helmet in the right way

Never ever rush on wearing your helmet. Take it easy and put the helmet on your head in a way that it does not pull your hair backward.

Wear a scarf or bandana

Experts also advise that you should wear a scarf or a bandana on your head and then put the helmet on. His will help eliminate the friction and prevent help loss. Also, the scarf will absorb the excess oil & sweat from the hair and scalp.

Follow these tips and prevent hair loss from wearing a helmet.
