How to Deal With Dry Skin

Dr. Rasya Dixit 30 Jul, 2023

Dry, flaky and itchy skin can become a bigger problem than the unevenness. You might have been dealing with dry skin by applying a moisturizer on it but it won’t be helpful always. The way you care for your skin, including cleaning, pampering, the environment you have around and even the clothes you wear.

This post covers a lot of ways that prove very helpful in dealing with a dry skin condition and get soothing results.

Stick to warm not hot:

While a steamy bath is more than welcomed to soothe your body and muscles, the temperature of the water is a core determiner of how you are treating your skin. Extremely hot showers can result in a completely oil less body. This happens because the hot water works on your oil barriers, breaking them and leaving your body unable to contain moisture on the skin.

Be gentle while cleansing:

Using a soapless cleanser is the best way to keep your skin soft, supple and smooth. It is important that you use a mild and odorless product for cleansing. Avoid products that have antibacterial additives as they can have drying effects on the skin. It is good to use products that contain ceramides.

Be cautious as you shave:

Whether you are a man or a woman, you must be shaving a lot of parts of your body. You must know that every time you shave the unwanted hairs from your body, you lose a certain amount of natural oils. It is recommended that you shave your body after the shower as this is the time the hair follicles and structure is soft for perfect shaving and minimum oil loss.

Protection from the sun:

Sunlight is the root cause of a range of skin problems including dullness and dryness of the skin. It is important that you keep your skin covered when you step under the sun. Besides, use an SPF 30 or more Sunscreen for the best results.

Moisture is very important:

To fight effectively against dry skin problems, you need to ensure you have your skin thoroughly moisturized. Moisturizers with shea butter, ceramides, stearic acid, or glycerin are the best to prevent the skin from damaging or losing natural oils. Every time you wash your face, you must apply a good moisturizer. Similarly, after showers, apply a body lotion to ensure suppleness of the skin. Pat dry your skin and apply a thick layer of moisturizing product to lock in the moisture.

These are some effective ways to deal with dry skin. However, if the problem is prominent, you can always reach out to a dermatologist and seek consultation.
