How to Differentiate Between Dry Skin and Dehydrated Skin

Dr. Dhvanil Shah 24 May, 2021

One of the core concepts of caring for your skin is knowing it right. Yet, the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin is not known to the majority of people. Although the two types of skin look so familiar, they are very different. It’s crucial to understand that Dry skin is a type of skin whereas dehydrated skin is a skin condition only.

What’s dry skin?

Dry skin means that the amount of oil in the skin is lesser than ideal. It is a skin type that is there since birth and almost all parts of your body including hands, scalp and legs are also just as dry as your face. Even if you put up lotions and moisturizers, they are absorbed by the skin so fast and you will need to redo them.

What’s dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin on the other hand is a skin condition wherein there is less water content present in the skin. This isn’t a birth-related condition but can be inflicted due to several reasons including makeup, diet, incorrect product use, or even weather. When you have dehydrated skin, the natural defense mechanism of the skin tends to develop more oil on the skin’s surface. This means that people with dehydrated skin are prone to have skin breakouts just like oily skin.

How does the Pinch test works?

A pinch test is the best way to identifying whether or not you have dehydrated skin.

Step 1: Pinch some skin on your cheek, abdomen, chest, or the back of your hand. Keep holding it for a few seconds.

Step 2: If the skin rakes some time to snap back, it is not dehydrated.

Step 3: If it takes some time to snap back, it is dehydrated.

What are the core signs and symptoms of dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin looks very dull and may have visible signs of pre-mature ageing. Surface wrinkles and loss of elasticity are very common for people with dehydrated skin.  You may also experience:

  • darker under-eye circles, or fatigued eye appearance
  • itchiness
  • skin dullness
  • Highly sensitive fine lines and wrinkles

What are the signs and symptoms of dehydrated skin?

In oily skin type, the skin lacks natural oils or lipids. It looks flaky and dry. You may also notice:

  • scaly appearance
  • white flakes
  • redness or irritation
  • increased incidence of psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis

What is the best treatment for dry skin?

There are many natural and medicinal ways that can be used to treat dry skin. Hyaluronic acid-rich ointments and creams are a great aid. Essential oil, shea butter, plant oils, lanolin, as well as ceramide is a great help.

What is the best treatment for dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin can be best treated with glycerin, aloe, honey, snail mucin, lactic acid, citric acid, ceramide and more.

Moisturizing the skin from time to time helps prevent dehydrated skin and soothe dry skin conditions. It is important that you consult your dermatologist if you have dull, dry and flaky skin. The dermatologists with help you identify whether it is a dry skin type or dehydrated skin condition and guide accordingly.
