How does Blue Light Affect You?

Digital Doctor 22 Mar, 2022

A lot of discussions are being done around the effects of blue light on human health, especially the concerns around skin problems. It is being said that blue light is actually more harmful than the UV rays and other harmful rays present in the environment. And where does this blue light come from? Well, from digital devices.

The more you stay exposed to your digital devices, the more you soak in the blue light and the results include poor skincare, premature aging and even risks of skin cancer. In this post, we have discussed everything about blue light in detail and how it affects us.

So, let’s find out!

What is Blue light?

To begin with, you first need to understand what Blue light is. Blue light is the part of the light spectrum. It is a common part of the natural light; however, it is also emitted by digital devices we use in our homes. Our smartphones, televisions, as well as laptop & personal computers, emit blue lights significantly.

It is being concluded that the blue light from indoor devices is more penetrating and hence exposes us to greater risks of skin problems including cancer.

The pandemic-induced work from home culture has made us more exposed to blue light and hence the skin problems are rising.

The adverse effects of Blue light:

The blue light from indoor sources has many adverse effects on our overall health. It affects the eyes, as the high wavelength penetrates the cornea and lens of the retina. This leads to several eye problems including dry eyes, cataracts and more.

The effects of blue light on the skin are also diverse. Again, the high wavelength of light affects the skin, especially in people with dark skin. The effects range from redness, pigmentation, patchy skin, swelling and worse- skin cancer.

The blue light indoors can work on the DNA negatively and damage the elastin and collagen fibers in the skin. It also affects the activity of the free radicals in the skin, which leads to a high pH value of the skin.

Can I protect my skin from Blue light?

You need to act on your skin protection program if you are exposed to a lot of blue light. Make sure you use eye glasses that help you protect your eyes from harmful blue light. For skincare, use sunscreen even when you are indoors.

An effective way to protect your skin is to keep the brightness of the devices on low. Also, limit your exposure to digital devices, especially during the nighttime.

Blue light can be damaging and it is important that you take all precautionary measures to keep it in check. We hope this article will help you achieve your goals.
